Curriculum

We teach a curriculum established by the Canadian Chito Ryu Karate Association.  A typical class starts with some warm up activities involving stretching and general fitness, and then proceeds with training in some or all of the following areas of karate:

Kihon – basic procedures and techniques for stances, strikes, kicks, and blocks.

Kumite – controlled sparring.  This uses kihon techniques in a practical situation to teach the principals of self defense

Kata – defined sequences of positions and techniques which strengthen the body and promote rhythm and coordination of body movements

Bunkai – the study of kata movement applications with a partner

In addition to the physical techniques, emphasis is also given to proper dojo etiquette, behaviour, and protocol.

When the student has attended a sufficient number of classes and demonstrated the required knowledge and proficiency,  they will be invited to be graded. If they pass they will move on to the next rank or belt colour.  Gradings for Ninja and Little Dragons typically take place during class, while grading for Junior and Adult level students take place about once per month at a time scheduled by Sensei.

The grading requirements for each level (or “kyu”) are outlined in the following documents:

Little Dragons Curriculum

Junior Curriculum

Adult Curriculum

The techniques described in the grading requirements are all taught in class.  Further information about the techniques described in the grading requirements is available in the Canadian Chito Ryu Karate Association Technical Manual, which is available for purchase at the dojo.
